The focus of General’s project was the development of an M.A. program for part-time lay persons. The faculty gathered in a retreat to discuss the purpose of such a program and its implications for the life of the seminary itself. Historically, General had required full-time commitment for academic programs as an expression of its residential, communal, and worship-centered form of seminary life. Nevertheless, General has recognized the wider mission of the church, the changing needs of laity, and the importance of reaching beyond its campus. After careful inquiry and consultation, the faculty recommended and the trustees approved the M.A. program, which was implemented in the fall 2003.
