Current Project Consultation

Invitation Letter

November 1, 2007

As a way of learning more deeply from the experience of schools participating in The Lexington Seminar and making it possible for all university schools to be included in one conversation, we will be scheduling a Final Project Consultation for the university divinity schools that have been part of the 2006 and 2007 seminars. This consultation will be held October 2–4, 2008 in Washington, DC, which seems to be the easiest and most convenient meeting place for travel. We will begin on Thursday afternoon (October 2) and conclude by noon on Saturday (October 4).

Each school should appoint three members of the faculty/administration to make up the team that will participate in the consultation. These participants do not need to have been part of the original team that participated in the June Seminar, but they do need, of course, to be deeply familiar with the school’s project.

The following nine schools will be participating in this consultation:

Candler School of Theology, Emory
Princeton Seminary
Duke Divinity School
Union Theological Seminary
Emmanuel College, University of Toronto
Vanderbilt Divinity School
Harvard Divinity School
Yale Divinity School
Notre Dame University Department of Theology

The purpose of the Final Project Consultation is to hear from schools about their projects—how they were created and implemented and, most importantly, what was learned along the way. At the same time that we describe and review the projects, we also want this occasion to be a setting in which to look at fundamental questions, such as the relationship between theological teaching and religious studies in education for ministry.

While some schools will have completed their projects and others will still be in progress, the experience of designing and implementing the educational projects provides a distinctive vantage point from which to examine such central issues. As many of you have mentioned, the chance to carry on conversations about theological teaching and learning with this group of schools is a significant opportunity.

For the time being, then, please reserve these dates and appoint the members of the team which will represent your school at the consultation. As with the previous summer seminar, The Lexington Seminar will take care of all expenses for participants.

I close by once again expressing my appreciation for the commitment and creativity that have been evidenced in your participation in The Lexington Seminar.

Sincerely,
Malcolm Warford
